Fort Des Moines Museum Hosts Summer Camps

Des Moines, IA – Beginning in June, through the end August, the Fort Des Moines Museum will offer exciting One Day Camps for $25 and Weeklong Camps for $100 -$125 for students entering 3rd - 8th grades. Your child will enjoy museum exploration and exciting daily themes such as: Military Spy Camp, Hunting for Lost Treasure, Boot Camp for Boys and Girls and a Victory Garden camp! For more information and to register contact 515-282-8060.

The Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center honors the United States Army’s first officer training class for African American men in 1917, and the establishment of the first Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942 (later renamed the Women’s Army Corps [WACs]), both of which occurred at Fort Des Moines. The officer class resulted in 639 new African American officers; the WAC trained 72,000 women and commissioned the first female officers. With these two successful accomplishments, the military led the march toward racial and gender inclusion throughout our greater American society, creating an amazing legacy of African American and women leaders along the way.

Today, the Fort Des Moines Museum vibrantly preserves and celebrates the history of Fort Des Moines and its transformational role in the history of the city and the nation. The Museum seeks to become an institution that is transformational in its role in the community. The Museum will use the power of its history to develop community leaders, inspire children to think differently, and change the future of our nation by exploring its past.
