The 4.6 acre Fort Des Moines Museum & Education Center, a National Historic Site, is scheduled for completion in three phases to open summer 2004.

Built in 1901, frontal view of 20,000 square foot Clayton hall (museum) with restored porches, new roof, windows and mechanical systems begins to expose the beauty of the former visiting officer's quarters.

Rear view of Clayton Hall (museum) shows classic building from 1901.

Featuring a stunning abstract monument by internationally acclaimed sculptor Richard Hunt, the base will include the names and hometowns of the 639 graduate captains and lieutenants from 1917 and the first 436 WAAC officers from 1942.

Museum development includes the rehabilitation of 20,000 square foot Clayton Hall (Top), the Chapel and an Interpretive Master Plan creating a road map for museum and park development.

In concert with the historic preservation work and the Interpretive Master Plan, Clayton Hall will become a military and historical museum with artifacts, archival photographs, period art, library, interactive video/film displays and a café. The construction and development work also includes grounds beautification, and a reflecting pool surrounded by the inscribed pavers and bricks of the Walk Of Honor, Tank Alley and other outdoor exhibits. An endowment fund for the perpetual operation of the memorial park and additional programming and exhibit development will reinforce generated revenue and insure the park's long-term operation.
