March
Women’s History Month at the Fort
Des Moines Museum—Presented by Wells Fargo and
Union Pacific
March 6, 11:00 AM: Warrior Women of World
War Two: For the first time in its history,
the United States mobilized women to serve in
the Armed Forces during the Second World War in
positions other than nursing. Hear the stories
of these “warrior women” first-hand,
and learn what it was like to be in the Women’s
Army Corps and the Women Accepted for Voluntary
Emergency Service (WAVES—Navy).. FREE
March 13, 11:00 AM: The Search for Amelia
Earhart: The disappearance of Amelia
Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, on July
2, 1937, near Howland Island, is one of the most
fascinating and enduring mysteries of the 20th
century. Now, 73 years later, a group of scientists,
engineers, and deep ocean experts are applying
the latest technology in an all-out effort to
locate her airplane—and finally answer some
of the questions surrounding her fate. The presentation
will include a brief Earhart history, a description
of the science involved in predicting where the
plane went down, and the story of the 2002 and
2006 search expeditions in a remote area of the
Pacific Ocean. The presenter is Rod Blocksome,
a Rockwell Collins engineer involved in the
search. FREE
March 20, 11:00AM - Justice Older Than
the Law: Washington, DC journalist Katie
McCabe will discuss the memoirs of Dovey Johnson
Roundtree, a Civil Rights leader born in North
Carolina who, like Edna Griffin, honed her leadership
skills as an African American woman in the Women’s
Army Corps. Katie McCabe will be signing books.
Sponsored by Union Pacific, Wells Fargo, and the
U.S. District Court of Southern Iowa, with additional
support provided by National Bar Association (NBA).
This event is free and open to the public.
March 27, 11:00AM to 1:00 PM- EGGceptional
Easter Egg Hunt: Join us for an egg-citing
egg hunt! With crafts areas, face painting, and
eggcellent prizes for finding nuggets of knowledge
during the museum scavenger hunt! Come for the
eggcitement!
March 27, 2:00 PM- “I Remember
the WAC”: The Women’s Army
Corps at Fort Des Moines left an indelible mark
on the city’s social and economic climate.
Hear the stories of community members who worked
with the WACs—in hair salons, clothing stores,
etc., or who simply remember interactions with
them. If you remember the WAC or you know someone
who did, we welcome you to share your story as
well! FREE
